ADIPOA-2 (www.adipoa2.eu) partners at Radboud University Medical Centre Nijmegen (Radboudumc) wrote a two-year project proposal called “Breaking the circle: Interleukin-1β stimulation of adipose stem cells increases their therapeutic efficacy in posttraumatic osteoarthritis via potentiation of anti-inflammatory actions in neutrophils”. This study is now funded by the Dutch Arthritis Association. Congratulations to the whole team!
The research team at Radboudumc will investigate in more detail the interaction between adipose stem cells and the inflammatory response with focus at IL-1 β. They will use the outcome of these experiments to set up a clinical trial in which they would like to administer adipose stem cells locally to patients with a joint lesion. 80% of patients with a joint lesion develop OA within 12-24 years despite surgical repair.
